Tesla challenges H-E-B as Austin’s biggest employer, reports show

As technology companies continue to move to Central Texas, it’s no surprise that those companies are starting to rival some of the area’s largest employers, like H-E-B. In Austin, Tesla, Inc. has almost doubled employment at its factory over the past year to nearly surpass H-E-B as the city’s biggest employer.

With tech billionaire Elon Musk at its helm, Tesla said it employed 22,777 at its Austin factory by the end of 2023, adding 12,300 employees over the course of that year, according to a San Antonio Express-News report. The Austin Business Journal reported that H-E-B employed 22,955 in Austin last year, with 145,000 Texas workers total.

After making the move to Texas in 2021, Tesla’s Texas gigafactory sits on 2,500 acres of land along the Colorado River in East Austin. Tesla has more than 600 job openings on its website as of Tuesday, April 2, most of which are based in Austin.

But while the electric vehicle giant has been making moves across Central Texas this year, Tesla is keeping its expansion into the area under wraps.

In January, Tesla announced a $1.5 million investment in a Hutto facility about 25 miles away from its Austin gigafactory. The purpose of this facility remains unknown.

About 50 miles away from the gigafactory, Tesla also put $200,000 toward a new facility in New Braunfels. The company hasn’t yet revealed what that space will be used for.
